Senator May Announces $20,000 Grant to Support Immigration Legal Aid in Central New York

Syracuse, NY - Senator Rachel May (D-Onondaga, Madison, Oneida) announces a $20,000 grant to the Volunteer Lawyers Project of Onondaga County to support the Immigration Law Program. 

The Volunteer Lawyers Project is a non-profit organization that provides free legal information, assistance, and representation in civil legal matters for low-income individuals, with the mission to provide equal access to justice to those in need. The Immigration Law Program provides pro bono support to address the unmet immigration legal needs of non-citizens in Central and Upstate New York.  

“We are now able to provide urgently needed free legal help to immigrants throughout Central New York and the North Country,” said Sally Curran, Esq., Executive Director of Volunteer Lawyers Project of Onondaga County, Inc. “We are connecting with unaccompanied minors, victims of domestic violence and trafficking, individuals who have fled violence in their home countries, and so many more, and we are providing them with the hope of finding permanent safety here in the US. But there is still so much more to be done — there continues to be more people in need than we can currently help.”

Central New York is a great place to live because of our rich diversity, and supporting our communities in a time of legal uncertainty is a necessity.”
