Senator May Announces $7.1 Million in Grants for Water Infrastructure Improvements

Syracuse, NY - Senator Rachel May (D-Onondaga, Madison, Oneida) announced the awarding of grants for water infrastructure projects to the City of Syracuse and the City of Oneida, totaling $7.1 million.

The City of Syracuse has received $2.1 million to replace the roof on the Morningside Reservoir located behind Manley Field House. The reservoir roof collapsed in March of 2018. This reservoir serves the Meadowbrook and University neighborhoods. After the collapse, the reservoir was removed from the city’s water sources to protect public safety.

The City of Oneida has received $5 million for improvements to the city’s long-term wastewater treatment facility. Oneida operates the largest wastewater treatment plant in Madison county and has had difficulty meeting required discharge amounts, in addition many of their facilities are reaching the end of their useful operational lives. This grant will help the city complete a comprehensive improvement project for wastewater treatment to better protect water quality for residents in Madison County.  

“Protection of our water resources is vital,” said Senator May. “Whether it’s the treatment of wastewater or ensuring our drinking water remains safe, I believe this is one of the most critical responsibilities of government. I am pleased that the State is continuing to support our local governments in protecting public health.”
