TWO BILLS CO-SPONSORED BY SENATOR FUNKE MOVE FORWARD
S1904 would make the property tax cap permanent and S1262 addresses teacher evaluations
On Wednesday, January 23, 2019, the Senate passed two bills co-sponsored by Senator Funke, reminding constituents of the 55th Senate District that Senator Funke continues to advocate for them in Albany.
Senate bill S1904 would make the property tax cap in New York State permanent. Senate Republicans first introduced the tax cap and it was enacted into law in 2011. They have led the charge to make it permanent ever since. Since its inception, the property tax cap has saved taxpayers more than $37 billion.
"I am pleased that the Senate is advancing legislation today to make the property tax cap permanent. I ran on this issue, and I am committed to getting a result that brings certainty to businesses, seniors and middle-class homeowners in my district," said Senator Funke.
Another bill Senator Funke has advocated for also passed the Senate. Under S1262, the use of state assessments for teacher evaluations would be eliminated and teacher performance would instead be overseen by local school districts.
“Local school boards and administrators know best how to evaluate their teachers. They never needed any help from the State of New York," said Senator Funke. "Today, I was proud that legislation I co-sponsor to end the use of standardized test scores in evaluating our teachers finally passed the Senate. Top down, one size fits all government solutions seldom, if ever, work and Governor Cuomo’s flawed teacher evaluation system was no exception."
