On May 7, the Senate is holding their annual Women of Distinction Celebration at the State Capitol where each Senator gives one constituent from their District this year's Women of Distinction Award. The award, given every year, honors an outstanding woman whose efforts in the community stand out.
This year, Senator Persaud chose nominee Lisa Ann Hermann, principal of James P. Sinnott Magnet Middle School for Health and Health Professions, as Senate District 19's Women of Distinction awardee. Hermann is a graduate of Hunter College and Bank Street College, was a recipient of the Estelle S. Levy Award for "most likely to succeed in education" and winner of the 2016 Beacon of Hope award from the East New York United Concerned Citizens, Inc. She was also inducted into international honor society Kappa Delta Pi at Brooklyn College in 2017 and has been the President of the Brooklyn Reading Council since 2017. Before becoming the principal of James P. Sinnott in 2013, Hermann previously served as a teacher and assistant principal under the Department of Education for 15 years; additionally, she is also an adjunct professor of Art Education and Fine Art. Hermann currently lives in Brooklyn with her three sons.
Senator Persaud said:
"Countless extraordinary women in New York positively impact the lives of those around them every day. Each year's triumphant 'Woman of Distinction' represents the other incredible female leaders in their communities and serves as a beacon of hope for the younger women following in their footsteps. I am thrilled to bestow the 2019 award to Lisa Ann Hermann, an award-winning educator, community leader and mother whose contributions to Senate District 19 are awe-inspiring and unparalleled."
