On Sunday, Jan. 6, Steven H. Pollard, a 30-year-old probationary firefighter assigned to Ladder Company 170 — stationed in Canarsie, responded to a car crash at the Mill Basin drawbridge on the Belt Parkway. In an attempt to cross over from the eastbound lanes to the westbound lanes, where two injured motorists remained trapped in their flipped-over car, he fell about 50 feet through the gap between the roads. Pollard, whom came from an FDNY family and had one and a half years on the job, was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital where he was rushed following the accident.
“We lost a brave man and devoted hero of the community in Steven Pollard yesterday. We thank him for his selfless service to the public and we will not forget the sacrifice he made for the safety of others,” Senator Persaud said. “My deepest condolences to Steven’s family and his fellow members of the FDNY.”
