(Albany, New York) — Today, Senator Todd Kaminsky honored the life of former Rockville Centre Mayor Eugene J. Murray, and passed a resolution in his memory. Murray’s son, Francis -- the current Mayor of Rockville Centre -- as well as his daughter-in-law, Barbara, accepted the resolution and were recognized by the Senate.
“Mayor Murray was a true public servant in every meaning of the word -- a legendary man who put his residents above himself,” said Senator Todd Kaminsky. “If Rockville Centre had a Mt. Rushmore, Mayor Murray’s face would certainly be on it. While Mayor Murray is sorely missed, his legacy lives on through his family and the Village he loved.”
“Mayor Murray was a giant. He achieved so much in his personal, professional, and public life, and as the Mayor of Rockville Centre for over 20 years he made so many important strides that had such a positive impact on the village. His accomplishments will continue to be remembered by the Village and its grateful residents,” said Assemblywoman Judy Griffin.
“I would like to thank Senator Todd Kaminsky for inviting my wife and I to the Senate floor to honor my father, former Mayor Eugene J. Murray with a resolution,” said Rockville Centre Mayor Francis X. Murray. “His words of remembrance were a beautiful reflection of my father’s life and accomplishments.”
Eugene J. Murray passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at the age of 93. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing combat in France and Germany. Upon completion of his military service, Murray founded a family floor waxing business. Murray served as Rockville Centre’s mayor from 1987 to 2007, and established a lasting legacy in the Village in multiple facets, founding the RVC Community Fund, which lives on to this very day. He also served as president of New York Conference of Mayors, as well as the Nassau County Village Officials Association. Additionally, Murray was an active member of the Rockville Centre Volunteer Fire Department for 72 years, serving as Chief of Department.
