BRONX, NY – Today, June 18th, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration may not immediately proceed with its plan to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program protecting approximately 700,000 undocumented youth from deportation, including nearly 30,000 New Yorkers. The decision allows new applications for the program to be submitted and current applications to be renewed.

This victory comes nearly three years after the Trump administration announced that it would end the DACA program, which launched several legal battles and a nationwide immigrant-led movement to create permanent protection for Dreamers and their families.

State Senator Alessandra Biaggi (D-Bronx/Westchester) issued the following statement:

“Today’s landmark decision to preserve the DACA program stems from the courageous advocacy of hundreds of thousands of immigrant youth, who continue to fight for their right to remain in the country they call home. While this victory will provide safety and peace of mind for nearly 700,000 immigrants nationwide, we must remember that DACA is only a temporary solution. We must continue to stand with our undocumented communities, and fight for the permanent protection of Dreamers and their families. It is our duty to ensure that immigrant New Yorkers are here to stay.”
