STATE SENATOR ALESSANDRA BIAGGI ISSUES STATEMENT ON NEW YORK AG LAWSUIT AGAINST THE NRA
August 6, 2020
NEW YORK, NY – Today, August 6th, New York State Attorney General Letitia James announced the filing of a lawsuit against the National Rifle Association (NRA) citing fraud, abuse, and violation of New York’s charities laws, with the intention to dissolve the organization.
State Senator Alessandra Biaggi (D-Bronx/Westchester) issued the following statement:
“For years the NRA has advanced a dangerous and violent vision of America that has led to the slaughter of our communities. In the face of unspeakable tragedy across the nation, the NRA has been a voice against reason, viciously blocking nearly every effort to stem the tide of mass shootings and neighborhood violence.
We now know that the organization’s corruption runs deeper than its moral failings. As they fought against even the most basic gun safety measures, the NRA’s leadership was also engaged in a years-long campaign to steal millions of dollars from the organization for personal gain. The NRA has betrayed the trust of its own members, revealing itself as an organization of grift and fraud.
I am grateful for Attorney General Letitia James’ commitment to upholding the laws and values of New York State, and thank her and her team for their thorough investigation of the NRA’s abuse and corruption.
The existence of the NRA does nothing to protect our communities –– instead, it puts Americans directly in the line of fire.”
