Senator George Borrello Applauds Launch of Chautauqua Lake Pilot Project
July 16, 2020
Statement from Senator George Borrello on today’s announcement that the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be launching an information session and collaborative pilot study designed to reduce the impact of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in Chautauqua Lake:
“This critically important pilot study is a victory for everyone who cares about the health and usability of our beautiful Chautauqua Lake. It is also the welcome culmination of two years of advocacy and effort that began in 2018 while I was Chautauqua County Executive. We approached the Army Corps of Engineers because we knew that they have the operational capacity and expertise needed to assess and manage a project of this scale. When combined with the resources of the DEC, this project will have a strong team working towards a goal we all support: ensuring that Chautauqua Lake remains an environmental jewel and economic asset for our region. Collaboration has been our strategy for Chautauqua Lake from day one and this effort has benefitted from the commitment of many people, especially Congressman Tom Reed who facilitated the initial federal involvement. My thanks go out to him and to all the partners at every level whose contributions made this progress possible.”
