Senator James Skoufis (D-Hudson Valley) and Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson (D-Newburgh) announced $250,000 grants each, totaling $500,000 in state funding to repave damaged streets in the City of Newburgh. This is in addition to the annual CHIPS funding that the state provides the City of Newburgh for roadwork.
The grants secured by Senator Skoufis and Assemblymember Jacobson will be distributed through the State and Municipal Facilities Program. Skoufis and Jacobson made the announcement on First Street between Liberty and Grand Street, an area riddled with potholes that is slated for re-paving through the secured funding.
“Residents, families, and commuters deserve a safe and effective way to get to and from their homes,” said Senator Skoufis. “The City of Newburgh’s roads have been left to deteriorate by the State for decades and with this funding, along with several local efforts, we are continuing to change course for the better. As we head into this new legislative session, Assemblymember Jacobson and I are dedicated to building upon last year’s successful efforts to deliver more support than ever for the City of Newburgh.”
Assemblymember Jacobson said, “The condition of a city’s streets is one of the top factors affecting quality of life. Residents need good roads to get to schools, shops, doctors, and places of employment. No one can afford the loss of time or money inflicted by a flat tire or a broken axle due to poor streets. The $500,000 that Senator Skoufis and I have secured for the City of Newburgh is reimbursable by funds from the State’s CHIPS and PAVE-NY programs, effectively doubling it for a total of $1 million.”
Skoufis and Jacobson are committed to delivering financial state assistance to the City of Newburgh. Back in June, the Governor signed Skoufis and Jacobson’s bill to bring financial relief to the Newburgh School District, resulting in $12.5 million in taxpayer savings. This summer, Skoufis and Jacobson opened up a District Office on Grand Street in the City of Newburgh to be as accessible as possible to the City’s constituents.
