Skoufis Announces Projects to Revitalize Cornwall

Senator James Skoufis (D-Hudson Valley) stood with Town of Cornwall officials, local residents, and small business owners to announce vital downtown revitalization projects that will be completed in the coming months. 

Senator Skoufis secured $200,000 in state funding to renovate and repair the Bridge Street bridge off of Main Street in Cornwall, a highly trafficked bridge for pedestrians. Skoufis additionally secured $125,000 for crosswalks, benches, and the beautification of Main Street in Cornwall. These grants follow Senator Skoufis' and local officials' successful lobbying of the Department of Transportation to rehabilitate six Route 9W overpasses, including those along Angola Road, Willow Avenue, and Quaker Avenue in the Town of Cornwall; a number of these overpasses will complete construction by the fall with the remainder finishing in 2021.

Thanks to Skoufis’ funding, in October, the Bridge Street bridge will re-open for pedestrian traffic, and within the next few weeks, work will begin on re-landscaping the traffic circle and additional downtown improvements. A full re-paving of Main Street will happen in the spring. The Main Street Committee of the Town of Cornwall worked to develop the revitalization plans. 

“The Town of Cornwall’s Main Street is a hub for businesses, residents, and visitors alike,” said Senator Skoufis. “As many of our small businesses are getting back on their feet, it’s timely and vital for these projects to come to fruition. Investing in much-needed infrastructure improvements will continue to be a top priority of mine, especially now when municipalities and taxpayers need all the relief they can get.” 

Cornwall Town Supervisor Richard Randazzo said, “Senator Skoufis has provided vital funding that makes it possible for the town to move forward on several infrastructure and recreation projects that the community needs to have completed for our residents. Without this additional funding, these projects would not be possible during these difficult and challenging fiscal times."

Cornwall Town Council Member Josh Wojehowski said, “Following the lockdown in the Spring, these projects will give our downtown area a major facelift and help our small business community by attracting more foot traffic from residents and visitors from throughout the region as well as investment into new ventures.” 

Back in February, Skoufis and town officials revealed the installation of the Jackson Avenue light in the Town of Cornwall. Many residents in Cornwall considered this intersection to be the most dangerous one in the Town. Additional infrastructure projects will be announced throughout the Senate District in the coming weeks.
