Metzger Honors Minisink Valley High School’s Sofia Macaluso with Senate Resolution for her National Championship Win in Wrestling
February 25, 2020
Albany, NY…On Monday, February 24, Senator Jen Metzger (SD-42) welcomed Minisink High School Sophomore Sofia Macaluso and parents Nikki and Heath Macaluso to the Senate Chambers for the adoption of a Senate Resolution honoring Sofia on her national wrestling championship win in the 122-pound division at the U.S. Marine Corps Cadet Women’s Freestyle this past summer.
Macaluso’s win last July at the FargoDome in Fargo, North Dakota, made her New York’s only National Champion, male or female, that summer and the seventh New York woman to receive a Cadet title.
“This fierce young woman has been wrestling since the age of seven, and has demonstrated just what can be accomplished with hard work and perseverance,” Metzger noted on the Senate Floor. “This is the highest honor that the New York State Senate can bestow upon an athletic achievement, and Sofia is certainly well-deserving.”
“Sofia's talents extend far beyond the mat, and I was thrilled to offer her an internship with my Middletown office last Fall,” said Metzger. “She is passionate about protecting the environment, and took on a project to research municipal recycling programs across the 42nd district with the goal of developing a model program that communities could adopt or use to improve existing programs. I look forward to seeing all that Sofia achieves in the future, in athletics, academics, and beyond.”
