Statement From State Senator John Liu On NYC Dept of Education Screened-Schools Admissions Policy
“Immediately after the DOE announced in April the new grading policy for June 2020 report cards, parents raised questions about how grades would factor into admissions to screened-schools. The DOE assured parents and elected officials that the admissions policy would be drafted by the end of May, but has still failed to do so.
The DOE must announce proposed criteria for Fall 2021 admissions to screened-schools as soon as possible and subject the policy to public review and comment. Furthermore, given prior statements by the Chancellor and Mayor about screened-schools, the DOE must also abandon any attempt to re-engineer admissions beyond 2021 without a thorough public discourse.”
