October 9, 2020
New York State Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-I-C-Rome, announced today that several public libraries in his district will be receiving library construction grant funds. The funding comes from $34 million in capital funds approved for public library construction projects in the 2019-20 State Budget.
Grants awarded to libraries in the 47th Senate District include:
- Didymus Thomas Library (9639 Main St., Remsen): $59,739 for disassembly of entrance steps, reconstruction of flanker walls, reinstallation of current stone treads and replacement of those damaged.
- Dunham Public Library (76 Main St., Whitesboro): $100,433 to build interior walls, remove drywall ceiling, install exterior window, access control panel and carpeting and safety improvements to the parking lot.
- Massena Public Library (41 Glenn St., Massena): $122,867 to upgrade/retrofit all interior and exterior lighting in the building.
- Potsdam Public Library (2 Park St., Potsdam): $350,479 to restructure library layout, replace elevator, improve staff areas and replace roof.
- Utica Public Library (303 Genesee St., Utica): $23,802 for Phase 1 of chimney rehabilitation and skylight leaking assessment procedures on the roof of the building.
- Western Town Library (9172 Main St., Westernville): $30,830 to replace basement emergency exit.
“For many communities throughout the region, local public libraries play a critically important role as centers of learning, culture and civic activity,” Sen. Griffo said. “However, it can be difficult to afford the necessary upgrades and renovations that these buildings may require. This funding will help libraries throughout my district undertake a variety improvements and projects that will allow them to flourish for years to come.”
