NEW YORK STATE SENATOR MONICA R. MARTINEZ SPONSORS LEGISLATION DESIGNATING DISPATCHERS AS FIRST RESPONDERS

MAY 14, 2020

(PATCHOGUE, NY): New York State Senator Monica R. Martinez sponsored S.8235, to designate public safety dispatchers, emergency responders, emergency operators, emergency complaint operators, and emergency service dispatchers as “certified first responders”.

“It is critical we recognize all the members of our community who are working on the frontlines to fight this pandemic. I am proud to work with Assemblyman Joe DeStefano by sponsoring this important piece of legislation and designating those who are first to handle the call when fear and crisis is happening. Dispatchers are the first sound of calmness when someone calls during an emergency. They are the first to send assistance when it is critically needed. We should ensure they are properly classified with the rest of our front line heroes, and are protected accordingly.  I would like to thank AME for bringing this to our attention and for always making sure their members are taken care of,” stated Senator Monica R. Martinez.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the need to ensure ALL of our first responders are protected should they contract this virus. Sponsoring and advocating for legislation, such as S.8235 and the multiple other bills Senator Martinez has written will protect our first responders and frontline workers.
