Recently, Senator Rob Ortt joined Sen. Pam Helming in calling for New York State to take over operations at Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Romulus, NY. Currently, New York State has no state-run veteran’s cemeteries. Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery was constructed to meet strict federal Veteran administration guidelines and is currently operated by Seneca County.
“We owe the men and women who have served in our nation’s military a place where they can rest and be looked after in a way that recognizes and commemorates their service,” said Sen. Ortt. “It is my hope that Sampson will be designated as the officially-designated state run veteran cemetery. As ranker of the Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security, and Military Affairs, I offer my support and assistance with making this prospect a reality and commend Senator Helming for all the work she’s done for local veterans.”
“Both Senator Ortt and I have been in contact with the New York State Divisions of Military and Naval Affairs to push for the designation of Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery as New York’s first veterans cemetery. This is a priority for veterans and their families across our region. We look forward to working with the committee recently assembled by Seneca County to advocate for Sampson’s designation. As ranking member of the Senate Committee on Veterans, Senator Ortt will be a key advocate and our efforts to get Sampson recognized as New York’s first official state cemetery,” said Senator Helming.
