A Statement from Senator Helming on Bill S7723
February 14, 2020
“New legislation has been introduced in the New York State Senate that would create the crime of criminal circumvention of bail reform. This law specifically targets law enforcement officers and district attorneys. It is just one more attempt by progressives to silence those who oppose the recently enacted changes to our criminal justice system. Actions like this have a chilling effect on our democracy. People on both sides of the aisle who believe in democracy and the rule of law should be alarmed by these actions. Furthermore, the introduction of this measure mere days after the attempted assassination of several NYPD officers sends an indecent message to the criminals roaming our streets who already think they have a get out of jail for free pass,” said Senator Helming.
