Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) issued the following statement regarding funding for the NYPD:
"The New York City Council's decision to cut funding for the NYPD by $1-billion is disturbing and will leave residents and visitors less safe. Such action will not result in meaningful police reform, it will only hamper law enforcement's ability to fight violent crime.
As a former State Trooper and Sheriff of Erie County, I know that the vast majority of police officers are dedicated public servants who work hard to protect our communities. They deserve our respect and support, including the financial resources necessary to protect us.
Efforts to defund police are, unfortunately, just the latest in a series of changes to our criminal justice system that have made our communities less safe.
I urge my colleagues in the Senate to reject such dangerous proposals."
