Syracuse, NY - Senator Rachel May (D-Onondaga, Madison, Oneida) is thrilled to have earned the “2020 Legislator of the Year” recognition from Environmental Advocates Action for her work to protect clean water, air, and public health. Each year Environmental Advocates Action recognizes a lawmaker who has gone above and beyond protecting the environment.
Senator May sponsored legislation that closed a loophole in the hazardous waste law, so that New York State can stop dangerous fracking waste from being dumped in landfills or even spread on roads, where it can leach into our precious freshwater streams and lakes. She also sponsored legislation which successfully banned waste incinerators from being built in the Finger Lakes region. Additionally, Senator May held the first public hearing on the Climate Leadership and Community Protection act, at SUNY ESF, and was a member of the working group that helped draft this landmark climate legislation.
“Central NY is lucky to be represented by such a dedicated advocate for the environment,” said Peter M. Iwanowicz, executive director of Environmental Advocates Action. “In just two short years, Senator May has proven to her constituents that positive change for the environment is not only possible, but achievable. To finally close the door on dangerous and toxic fracking waste is a laudable accomplishment that will have a long-lasting impact on our state’s drinking water. Environmental Advocates Action is pleased to award Senator May our 2020 Legislator of the Year award...”
“What an honor to receive this recognition from Environmental Advocates Action,” said Senator Rachel May. “Environmental protection and sustainability have been my top focus since long before I ran for office, and it is wonderful to be in a position now to help move some of EA’s long-time priorities across the finish line.”
