SERINO RELEASES VIRTUAL CAPITOL TOUR FOR STUDENTS
May 5, 2020
HYDE PARK, NY–Senator Sue Serino today released a virtual tour of the New York State Capitol to help teachers and parents supplement lesson plans for young students whose curriculums would now be including an introduction to state government.
“Since taking office, I have always looked forward to this time of year that typically brings hundreds of young students to the State Capitol for a day of tours and hands-on lessons,” said Senator Sue Serino. “To see their young faces light up at the sight of the Senate Chamber, or the ‘Million Dollar Staircase,’ is a special experience for teachers, parent chaperones and lawmakers alike. This year, we want to be sure educators and parents can still have that experience from the safety of their own homes.”
The five-minute video features highlights of the State Capitol Building including footage of the Senate and Assembly Chambers, as well as an introduction from Senator Serino.
Senator Serino’s office has also coordinated with students pursuing degrees in elementary education to develop a worksheet that corresponds with the virtual tour that parents and educators can use to further engage students on the topic. The worksheet, which can be printed, comes in two formats, multiple choice or question and answer, which educators can choose based on grade level.
Serino made sure to thank area teachers as this week is National Teacher Appreciation Week, saying, “Our educators continue to step up in a big way, not only for their students, but for their families and school communities as well. They continue to touch countless lives, and we are so grateful for their passion and dedication. This is a small thing we are doing to remind them that we are thinking about them, we appreciate them, and will continue working to support them during this time.”
