Senator Biaggi Issues Statement On Westchester District Attorney Rocah’s Call For A DOJ Inquiry Into The Mount Vernon Police Department
May 4, 2021
BRONX, NY – On April 30th, 2021 Westchester District Attorney Mimi Rocah called on the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate the Mount Vernon Police Department (MVPD) for “pervasive and persistent alleged civil rights violations” including continuous excessive use of force, unlawful strip searches, and other misconduct.
State Senator Alessandra Biaggi (D-Bronx/Westchester) issued the following statement:
“I commend Westchester District Attorney Mimi Rocah for calling on the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) to fully investigate the Mount Vernon Police Department (MVPD) for potential civil rights violations. The allegations of misconduct within the MVPD are deeply disturbing and threaten the safety of every Mount Vernon resident. It is imperative for the DOJ to thoroughly investigate the MVPD’s policies and training to determine systemic flaws that encourage this pervasive misconduct. I applaud District Attorney Rocah’s commitment to bringing full transparency and accountability to our criminal justice system in order to build public trust between our communities and the police.”
