SENATOR BIAGGI’S STATEMENT ON THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF SEPTEMBER 11TH

“As today marks the 20th anniversary of September 11th, I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families and loved ones of those killed and wounded by this great tragedy. Among the 2,977 lives lost, more than 144 Bronx residents, 10 Pelham residents, and 5 Mount Vernon residents were taken from us. Today we unite to remember their lives and pay tribute to the brave first responders who sacrificed theirs to save hundreds more.

September 11th forever changed the landscape of our city, country, and world. Following these tragic attacks, our nation launched a twenty year war that led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of American military personnel, civilians, journalists, and humanitarian workers. The fear following the September 11th attacks ignited a rise in hatred, violence, and repression towards Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian communities who saw their freedoms limited and rights curtailed, leaving them fearful and vulnerable. Today reminds us of the work that lies ahead to address the wounds that have yet to heal.

Twenty years later, we must reignite our promise to combat hate and violence in all its forms. Freedom, acceptance, and compassion are ideals that transcend borders, and must be fought for in every corner of our communities. As our nation continues to heal from the wounds of September 11th and what followed, we must remind ourselves of our resilience and never forget the bravery exemplified by our fallen heroes.”
