January 26, 2021
Brooklyn, NY - Senator Gounardes today announced an online memorial wall honoring members of the community lost to the COVID-19 pandemic and invited the community to share the stories of family and friends in memoriam. The virtual project is meant to honor those who have passed, as well as provide support for those who are grieving their loved ones. Since the start of the pandemic, over 40,000 New Yorkers have died after testing positive from the coronavirus. In New York City alone, over 19,000 have passed after testing positive, which is just under 50% of all reported deaths in the state. Southern Brooklyn has many residents who are seniors and frontline workers.
“Although we cannot grieve for our loved ones who have passed with one another in person, our community can still join together emotionally to celebrate the lives of those we lost. We have endured innumerable sacrifices in the face of this pandemic and deserve to have a chance to grieve together. I hope that sharing and reading the stories on our community memorial wall helps bring us through these difficult times together, ” said State Senator Andrew Gounardes.
