Governor's administration admits deceiving public on nursing home deaths
February 12, 2021
“The governor’s top aide has finally admitted that the Cuomo administration deliberately deceived us on the nursing home deaths. That the disclosure happened in a closed-door, damage control meeting with key Democratic state lawmakers is a real disgrace.
“For months, the governor’s office has stonewalled the media, the public and the families of those who lost loved ones in nursing homes. Now, backed into a corner due to an Attorney General investigation and a lawsuit brought by a good government organization, the Cuomo administration has gone behind closed doors to apologize to Democratic lawmakers for having put them in an uncomfortable and politically difficult position. Instead of apologizing to families and the public for covering up nursing home deaths, Cuomo’s team is apologizing to politicians.
“The State Legislature has a constitutional obligation to act as a ‘check’ against the administration. My Republican colleagues and I, on 14 separate occasions, have sought to end the governor’s emergency authority and restore balance. I am calling on my Democratic colleagues to join us and do it today, which is very easy – all it takes is a simple vote.
“We need a US Department of Justice investigation to determine what the governor knew and when. If obstruction of justice has occurred someone needs to be held accountable and the only way to determine that will be a top to bottom investigation of the Cuomo administration.”
