Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick Introduces

First 10 Bills in the NYS Senate

Albany, NY - Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick announced today that he has introduced his first ten bills in the NYS Senate, tackling issues from fair representation in school boards, to saving taxpayer money through efficiency, to repealing tax exemptions for properties in violation of zoning laws.

“I promised my constituents that I would hit the ground running in Albany,” said Senator Reichlin-Melnick. “Earlier this week, on just the fourth day of the legislative session, I’m proud to be introducing several pieces of legislation that will have a positive impact on the lives of families in Rockland and Westchester.”

Some of the bills introduced by Senator Reichlin-Melnick would:

Authorize any school district in Rockland County to create wards for the purposes of school board elections, subject to voter approval. The bill gives local districts more options for ensuring fair representation for all communities.

Allow municipal courts to accept guilty pleas and payment for traffic tickets online, saving time for people paying tickets and reducing costs for local courts.

Extend a partial property tax exemption to active auxiliary police officers in Rockland, similar to one already offered to volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers.

Prohibit properties which are found to be in violation of a local government’s zoning laws from receiving a property tax exemption.

Ensure that criminals who have sexually assaulted and murdered a child are not eligible for parole.

Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick represents the 38th State Senate District, which covers four towns in Rockland and Westchester.
