November 12, 2021
Marine Corps Veteran and New York State Senator James Sanders Jr. commemorated Veterans Day by visiting with service members at a ceremony at Brooks Senior Center in Jamaica where he presented each of them with a certificate of recognition for their service to our country.
"It is always a joy to be here at Brooks Senior Center, especially when I can meet with my fellow veterans," Sanders said. "On Veterans Day, we remember the brave men and women of our armed forces who have defended our country and sacrificed so much to protect our freedom. As a proud Marine Corps veteran, I would like to thank my fellow service members for responding to the call of duty. Please know that I support you and stand in solidarity with you, not just on Veterans Day, but every day."
Senator Sanders also honored April Jones, the founder of House-A-Soldier, with a New York State Commendation Award. This award is given to individuals who exemplify the spirit of volunteerism and devote their personal time, energy, creativity, and expertise to others. They are leaders in the community who enrich the social, health, and educational well-being of their fellow citizens.
"I want to thank April for her continued dedication to helping veterans," Sanders said. "Although not a veteran herself she comes from a family of service members and it was by watching their dedication to our country that she was inspired to help veterans. We need more people like her in the community."
