Senator James Sanders Jr. Will Ensure that Former Staffer Receives Final Paycheck
January 23, 2021
State Senator James Sanders Jr. said: “It has come to our attention that one of our former employees is having a problem getting his last paycheck from senate personnel. This former employee (whom we will not name out of respect for his privacy) worked for our office for approximately 3 months before he resigned in November 2020. This former employee has not contacted our office since that time to request any assistance. It is important to note that New York State Senators are not tasked with issuing paychecks to their staff. Paychecks are issued through the centralized system of senate personnel.
According to an article on this matter which was published in the Queens Daily Eagle on January 21, 2021
https://queenseagle.com/all/former-queens-senate-staffer-missing-weeks-of-pay-while-living-in-homeless-shelter “A final check from the Senate was not able to be sent because the only address listed for Mr. Smith caused a bounce-back when a check was sent there,” Senate spokesperson Gary Ginsburg said. “Efforts to reach Mr. Smith and ensure he receives his final check are ongoing.”
Had our office been contacted directly by the former employee immediately when the error was first detected, this could have been resolved in a timely fashion. However, now that I am aware of the situation, I think have a speedy resolution that will satisfy all parties. I will reach out to senate personnel and advise them to send the check to their Manhattan office, so the former employee can pick it up as soon as possible."
