Statement From Senator James Sanders Jr. One Year After The Murder of George Floyd
May 25, 2021
State Senator James Sanders Jr. said: “Today on the one-year anniversary of the death of George Floyd, we take time to reflect on the injustices committed in our society by members of law enforcement against people of color. This tragic murder of an unarmed man by a now former police officer did not have to happen. For those of us who watched the infamous and horrifying video of Derek Chauvin with his knee on George Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds, there are no words – just shock and disbelief. This is not an isolated incident. Today as we remember George Floyd, let us also remember to honor the lives of Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Mike Brown, Daniel Prude, Adam Toledo, Ma’Khia Bryant, and the countless others who are no longer with us due to inappropriate police action. We must support legislation like the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act so that this type of loss of life never happens again.”
