Tedisco: Move NYS Tax Deadline to May 17th

Senator Jim Tedisco (R,C-Glenville) today announced he will be introducing new legislation to extend New York State’s individual income tax deadline from April 15^th to May 17, 2021, and exclude unemployment benefits from taxable income to be consistent with the federal government.

This week, the U.S. Treasury Department and IRS moved the federal income tax deadline for individuals to May 17^th. New York State’s income tax deadline still remains April 15^th causing confusion and creating further burden for taxpayers and tax preparers who now have to file twice over the course of two months.

Tedisco’s legislation, which is being drafted, would bring New York in line with the federal government and give taxpayers until May 17^th to file their taxes. It also would comply with new federal law and exclude the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits from 2020 taxable income. 

“New Yorkers already pay some of the highest taxes in the nation. The very least our state government can do in this terrible pandemic and difficult economic climate is to give taxpayers and tax preparers an additional month to file their income taxes as we are getting from the federal government and not force those who lost their jobs to pay taxes on their unemployment benefits. This is a no-brainer and should get done as soon as possible,” said Senator Jim Tedisco, a member of the Senate Finance Committee.
