November 5, 2021
(Albany, NY) - Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law legislation that will update continuing education requirements for architects in New York State. The new provisions will allow architects to take full advantage of the ease and flexibility of online courses as they continue their education after licensure. The bill updates education law for continuing education for architects for the first time since 1999.
The legislation was sponsored by Senator Jeremy Cooney (SD-56, Rochester) and Assemblymember Deborah Glick (SD-66, Manhattan). Senator Cooney is a member of the New York State Senate’s Higher Education Committee.
Senator Jeremy Cooney:
New York’s architects are some of the most talented in the country, and it is important that they have flexible and adaptable continuing education opportunities available to them so that they can stay current and gain skills for their careers. This is especially true as we work to secure the largest infrastructure investment in recent history—we need the best trained architectural team to seize this moment. I am proud to sponsor this legislation and I am grateful to Governor Hochul for signing it into law.”
Georgi Ann Bailey, CAE, Executive Vice President, The American Institute of Architects New York State:
“Architects in our community are thankful for the support of Senator Cooney and New York State as they carry out their work building our region. The necessary update to continuing education requirements will make it easier for professionals to expand their knowledge, keep up with the most up to date practices, and increase the efficiency and safety of building design across our region and state.”
