Statement on Passage of S1351: Repealing the 'Walking While Trans' Ban
February 2, 2021
QUEENS, NY — "Today, the Senate passed S1351 to repeal the 'Walking While Trans' ban. For far too long, police have used this law to make discriminatory arrests, and it has led to the targeting of majority Black, Latinx, and Trans and Gender Non-Conforming New Yorkers. Repealing this law that only further adds to the mass incarceration of marginalized communities is the right thing to do. This historic vote was made possible through tremendous work of the advocates, my colleague Senator Hoylman, and I am proud to have stood with them in the fight to remove the 'Walking While Trans' ban from our law a reality."
