- Recall; Elections
As Senate Republicans continue to advance amendments to curtail executive authority and restore the balance of power in government and with several Democrat Senators expressing similar sentiments, state Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-I-C-Rome, today called attention to legislation he has introduced that would make the state’s government more transparent, responsive and accountable to those it represents.
The legislation (S3777), which has been sent to the Attorney General for an opinion, would place the question of whether to remove and replace statewide-elected officials such as the Governor, Comptroller and Attorney General on the ballot.
Sen. Griffo has proposed bills related to this concept since 2009. He also plans to submit additional legislation that would make the process more extensive, including various levels and branches of government.
“I have been a longstanding advocate of this legislation, as well as other important election-related reforms, since I have been in office,” Sen. Griffo said. “Twenty-four states presently allow citizen initiative measures of some type. My bill would further empower New Yorkers and foster a greater participatory democracy in the state.”
Sen. Griffo also has introduced legislation that would amend the state’s constitution to incorporate term limits in the state.
