Griffo statement on New York City policy that would grant non-citizens the right to vote in local elections

New York State Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-C-I-Rome, released the following statement today regarding a proposal that would allow more than 800,000 non-citizens to vote in elections in New York City. The New York City Council is expected to ratify the bill Thursday: 

“Voting is a sacred right in our country that is reserved for United States citizens only. This proposal could have potentially far-reaching and harmful effects on the integrity of our electoral system. It also creates a slippery slope. If the New York City Council undertakes such a measure, what would prevent New York City Assembly and Senate members from attempting to implement a similar policy statewide? For the sake and future of our democracy, Mayor de Blasio, who has reportedly raised concerns about the wisdom and legality of this measure,  should take action and veto this legislation instead of sitting on his hands.”
