Statement from Senator Michelle Hinchey on Eviction Moratorium
September 1, 2021
ALBANY, NY (September 1, 2021) – Senator Michelle Hinchey (SD-46) today issued the following statement on extending the eviction moratorium:
"The recent Supreme Court rulings paired with the rise in Delta-variant cases and the systemic failure of the State’s ERAP delivery have prompted the Legislature to extend the eviction moratorium to keep New Yorkers, who have faced financial hardship, safe and in their homes.
"With this extension, we also recognize that our small landlords are bearing an unfair burden, suffering severe mental and financial hardships that threaten their livelihood. Because of that, this extension includes new protections for small landlords including the ability to seek due process, a commitment to get ERAP money into their hands quickly, and the creation of a $250 million hardship fund that includes payments to landlords whose tenants have vacated their property or are unresponsive or uncooperative.
"As New Yorkers continue to face the devastating economic impacts of the pandemic, applying for assistance through ERAP remains the primary avenue of support. Landlords and tenants alike should complete their applications immediately in order to access these funds. All residents of the 46th District can call my office at 845-331-3810 for assistance. We are here to help with this process and we will continue to do everything we can to make sure New Yorkers receive the relief they need as quickly as possible.”
