Brouk Announces Extension of Public Comment Period for Erie Canal Management Project
August 30, 2021
ROCHESTER, NY - Today, Senator Samra G. Brouk announces that the Canal Corporation has extended the public comment period on the Earthen Embankment Integrity Program, published in response to opposition to clear cutting along the Erie Canal, to October 15, 2021.
“I am relieved that the Canal Corporation made the decision to hold additional information sessions and extend the public comment period on its Embankment Integrity Program and plans to cut back trees and vegetation along the Erie Canal,” said Senator Brouk. “Canal Corporation leadership is listening to the voices of our community and my personal requests to rethink its strategy regarding tree and vegetation maintenance along the Erie Canal. My office has been working tirelessly over the last month to uplift the voices of residents who are dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of our community. I look forward to hearing more details about Canal Corp’s maintenance plans and creating a better framework for community input on specific projects.”
Senator Brouk has stood with community members opposing the clear-cutting of trees along the Erie Canal, and has facilitated greater dialogue between residents, business owners and the Canal Corporation.
