Senator Sean Ryan Visits Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation And Tours Saranac Lake To Learn More About Lake Ecology

SENATOR SEAN RYAN VISITS ADIRONDACK LAKES SURVEY CORPORATION AND TOURS SARANAC LAKE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT LAKE ECOLOGY

SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. – On Tuesday, October 5, New York State Senator Sean Ryan joined Kevin Chlad, Director of Government Relations for the Adirondack Council, for a visit to the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation (ALSC). The Adirondack Council is a privately funded organization dedicated to protecting the ecological integrity of the Adirondack Park using science and advocacy. Following the lab visit, the group was joined by Assemblymember Billy Jones for a boat tour of Lake Flower, Oseetah Lake, and Lower Saranac Lake to learn more about the region and lake ecology.

The ALSC’s mission is to monitor changes to natural ecosystems of the Adirondack Mountain ecological zone with a focus on water quality, atmospheric deposition, fish surveys, and other biological and chemical studies for the benefit of regulatory agencies and the general public.

During the visit, Senator Ryan learned about the work done in the ALSC lab in Ray Brook, New York, where scientists are undertaking a long-term chemical monitoring project of 52 distinct waters in the Adirondack region that began in 1992. The program, which began as a result of ALSC research that shed light on the effects of acid rain in the region, is sponsored in part by the New York State Energy Research Development Authority and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The lab also conducts monitoring of cloud water collected at Whiteface Mountain, located in the northeastern part of the New York State Adirondack Park.
