Senator Stec Sponsors Debar Pond Lodge Constitutional Amendment
January 27, 2022
Senator Dan Stec (R,C-Queensbury) today announced he’s sponsoring a Constitutional Amendment to save Debar Pond Lodge. Senate bill S7868 would allow New York State to transfer the lodge to the Debar Pond Institute in exchange for 400 acres of land in the Adirondacks. This amendment would enhance the size and beauty of the Forest Preserve in the Adirondacks, while also ensuring the historic lodge remains protected and preserved for future generations to enjoy.
The Debar Pond Lodge Land Exchange Amendment is also sponsored in the Assembly by Assemblyman Billy Jones. With strong bi-partisan state and local support, this amendment could be on the ballot as early as fall 2023.
“The Debar Pond Lodge Land Exchange Amendment is a win-win for the Adriondacks and our efforts to protect our natural environment,” Stec said. “This amendment would enhance the size and beauty of the Forest Preserve in the Adirondacks, while also protecting the historic lodge. By passing this amendment, we can ensure that both the Debar Pond Lodge and its surrounding space are maintained and preserved for future generations.”
“Historic preservation and environmental conservation are important to North Country residents and I am proud to sponsor this bill in the Assembly to save the Debar Pond Lodge,” said Assemblyman Billy Jones. “Not only will this amendment add more land to the New York State Forest Preserve, but it will also preserve an important part of the history of the Adirondack region and provide a community space for meetings and outdoor recreation.”
“This is an elegant solution for saving the historic building complex, maintaining the wild forest character of Debar Pond, and adding 406-acres adjacent to Meacham Lake to the Forest Preserve,” said Howie Kirschenbaum of Adirondack Architectural Heritage.
