Senator Daphne Jordan’s bipartisan legislation establishing the New York State Vietnam War Commemorative Medal passes the State Senate

Albany, NY – New York State Senator Daphne Jordan (R,C,I-Halfmoon), Member of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, proudly announced that her bipartisan legislation establishing the New York State Vietnam War Commemorative Medal passed the State Senate during today’s session. 

Senator Jordan’s bipartisan legislation, Senate Bill S.2089B, amends Section 247 of the Military Law to establish the “Vietnam War Commemorative Medal” for members of the armed forces or organized militia serving abroad in the Vietnam War from November 1, 1955, through April 30, 1975.  

Senator Jordan’s bipartisan legislation passed during today’s session by a vote of 62-1. The Assembly companion measure to Senator Jordan’s legislation, Assembly Bill A.357A, sponsored by Democrat Assemblyman William Magnarelli (D-129^th District) has also passed the State Assembly.

“New Yorkers proudly recognize and honor the courageous service and sacrifice of our heroic armed forces. However, for too many Vietnam War Veterans, the reception they received upon returning home was far from welcoming, with some facing outright hostility. The New York State Vietnam War Commemorative Medal is about healing, unity, and, above all else, respect for these proud patriots. The medal will be awarded on behalf of all New Yorkers who honor our armed forces and have the deepest admiration and appreciation for the men and women of our military who served with courage and distinction during the Vietnam War,” Senator Jordan said. 

“My legislation establishing a New York State Vietnam War Commemorative Medal seeks to provide the proper public recognition and heartfelt respect that our Vietnam War Veterans so rightfully deserve. I’m proud that my bipartisan bill was adopted by the Senate and I’m hopeful it will soon be signed into state law,” Senator Jordan stated.
