Senator Sanders Issues Statement on Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine
February 25, 2022
Senator James Sanders Jr. said: "Russian President Vladimir Putin must stop his senseless and unprovoked war against the Ukraine. If he does not cease the horrific actions that have caused suffering, destruction and tragic loss of life then President Biden and the United States along with the NATO alliance must use maximum sanctions, short of military action, to end this war. There have been massive protests by the Russian people against Putin for his attack on the Ukraine. If the Russian people are brave enough to stand up to an autocratic tyrant then the rest of the world should stand up too.
The Ukraine is an independent, peaceful and democratic country. Putin’s actions demonstrate an imperialistic land theft motivated by his attempt to re-write the end of the Cold War. NATO and its allies must remain firm against this blatant aggression. Putin’s actions are in violation of international law, the UN charter and the principles contained in the NATO-Russia Founding Act, according to a statement by NATO.
Failure to defend a democratic country is akin to Neville Chamberlin’s ill-advised policy of appeasement toward Nazi Germany prior to World War II. During this difficult time, all people of good will must stand with the Ukrainian people and offer our support to help them."
