Queens, NY - Following the Biden Administration’s plan to expand Title 42, State Senator Jessica Ramos (D, SD-13) issued the following statement:
“There will never be a politically convenient moment for the federal government to address our long-standing need for immigration reform. Instead of kicking the can down the road, and letting the backlog of cases that need attention swell, our communities and our economy need the Senate, Congress, and the President to show some political courage.
The first priority needs to be action on working papers for the people who are arriving and those who have been here working in unsafe, under-the-table conditions for years. It is not an exaggeration to say that the failure to create a path for undocumented people to work has put my neighbors in danger. New York City is working around the clock to attempt to house and support this recent influx of asylum seekers, but do not mistake our efforts for a desire to turn people who are fleeing the consequences of our own actions away. At some point, someone has to be the leader who recognizes that repeating the same steps over and over and expecting different results is not a functional way to run our government.”
