SENATOR MANNION AND ASSEMBLYMEMBER HUNTER HIGHLIGHT STATE SUSPENSION OF THE GASOLINE TAX TO LOWER COSTS FOR CENTRAL NEW YORKERS
June 9, 2022
SYRACUSE, NY – Senator John W. Mannion and Assemblymember Pamela Hunter today highlighted the imminent suspension of the state tax on gasoline. The lawmakers were early proponents of drastic state action to curb rising gas prices and cosponsored legislation that was the basis for the final agreement in the state budget.
Senator John W. Mannion (SD-50) said, “Rising gas prices hurt families and our economy and we are doing everything possible at the state level to lower costs for Central New Yorkers. The state gas tax suspension and the state-authorized Onondaga County gas tax cap will both take effect on June 1st. While this will provide some immediate relief at the pump, it is clear our leaders in Washington must take additional action to return gas prices to the levels we are all accustomed to.”
Assemblymember Pamela Hunter (AD-128) said, “As summer kicks off it usually brings with it a spike in fuel demand. With gas prices already reaching record highs, the tax relief that will take effect on the county and state level will provide hundreds of millions of dollars in savings for New York drivers. The cost of fuel also impacts the price of basic necessities and as state legislators we will do everything we can to curb the inflation that everyone is experiencing.”
The suspension of New York gas taxes will save New Yorkers approximately $600M through the end of the year. It temporarily removes $0.16 per gallon in state taxes and the legislature authorized counties to follow suit. In Onondaga County, the gas tax cap will mean drivers will pay no more than $0.12 per gallon through November. Gas stations who attempt to circumvent the tax suspension or fail to pass savings onto customers could face fines, restitution, or other penalties under the state’s price gouging laws.
