SYRACUSE – Senator John W. Mannion (SD-50) today released the following statement:
“Micron could have gone anywhere in the world to invest $100B and create nine thousand jobs - but it chose Central New York and the 50th Senate District for a reason. We have the history, the moxie, and the determination that’s needed to transform our economy into a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing.
A successful and coordinated effort across federal, state, and local government was instrumental in securing a deal. President Biden and Senator Schumer made the federal Chips and Science Bill a reality and New York State and Governor Hochul did our part by passing and signing my Green Chips legislation.
The road ahead is filled with challenges and it will be an all-hands-on-deck effort to make this partnership a success for our people, communities, Micron, and for American dominance in computer chips and advanced manufacturing.
My priorities moving forward are making sure construction jobs are local and securing the significant infrastructure and workforce investments a project of this magnitude demands.
Filling nine thousand jobs over the next two decades will be a massive undertaking that brings to scale the apprenticeships and workforce training partnerships that I've proudly funded over the last two years. I look forward to continuing to partner with MACNY, CenterstateCEO, Syracuse University, OCC, the trades, and many others who have been working towards this moment for many years and know what it takes to get the job done.”
