Addabbo co-sponsored legislation to support businesses and create jobs passes Senate

The NYS Senate passed legislation co-sponsored by Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr., to support businesses, economic development, and job growth in New York State. 

The first bill (S.3098D) creates a working group known as the NYS Advisory Council on Coronavirus Economic Recovery and Workforce Development. The Advisory Council is a 16-member committee concerned with the issues of coronavirus economic recovery as well as issues impacting businesses post-recovery. The members represent various geographic areas and have knowledge of business, education, workforce development, or public-private partnership for economic recovery. The council members will meet as often as needed but no less than twice a year, to conduct open and honest dialogue on possible solutions to current and future problems. No compensation will be provided to council members who will offer recommendations to the economic development commissioner and submit an annual report. 

“Many small businesses struggled to survive challenges presented by the pandemic, and the impacts for their future are unknown as we are navigating a recovery that isn’t as straightforward as any of us would have hoped,” said Addabbo. The Coronavirus Economic Recovery Advisory Council will allow the state to provide businesses with much-needed assistance when and where it’s most appropriate,” added Addabbo. 

A second bill (S.4110A) requires state agencies and public authorities with personal protective equipment (PPE) and medical supplies contracts valued over $50,000 to utilize New York businesses that manufacture or produce such goods in whole or in part. If PPE or medical supply items made in NYS, in the United States, or by a preferred source is unavailable, any other domestically-located business may be utilized to satisfy the 30% requirement set by the proposal. 

“This legislation will help create jobs and present new opportunities for NY businesses, while also making the delivery of PPE and medical supplies quicker and cheaper, eliminating any delayed shipments from overseas,” said Addabbo. 

After passing the Senate, both bills were delivered to the Assembly for consideration.
