Senator Thomas’ Statement on MTA Proposals To Increase Fares, Cut Service
December 1, 2022
“I remain opposed to any MTA proposals that raise fares and reduce services in Nassau County. The MTA must find alternatives that expand revenue streams without burdening hard-working Long Islanders.
Since taking office, I have fought for more MTA funding in the budget to reduce the financial burdens for Nassau commuters. The importance and impact of transformational projects including the Third Track Rail, Denton Avenue Bridge upgrades, and expansion to Grand Central Station on the residents of Senate District 6 cannot be overstated. The same residents that rely on public transportation the most - especially those whose livelihoods go hand in hand with their ability to successfully commute to their workplace every day – will be those hit hardest with price hikes.
I urge the MTA Board to reconsider implementing measures that would be yet another blow to everyday New Yorkers struggling to stay afloat in this uncertain economy.”
