This morning, I accompanied Mayor Eric Adams at the new centralized office to provide assistance to asylum seekers in New York City. In my speech I applauded the Mayor's initiative and expressed how while in other states they play politics with the lives of human beings, in New York we face the crisis with solutions, dignified treatment and with our heads held high.
Many of the people who contribute every day to the development of this city are or were undocumented immigrants. Now we see how nearly 11,000 people have been treated in an undignified manner by the political game of other states. In my tour of the center I was able to see how agencies such as the New York Office of Emergency Management and other governmental and community entities have opened a space for dignity, respect and help in times of crisis.
Once again I applaud the firm decision of the New York City Mayor's Office to always offer dignified treatment to any human being in need and I join in the call for all of us to do what is necessary to support these families.
At the Center, people can receive assistance for shelter, school enrollment, legal, health, among others. With the highest humane treatment and free of charge.
