SAUGERTIES, NY – Senator Michelle Hinchey today announced that her nominee Shaan Sekhon, a senior at Saugerties High School, has formally been selected as one among just 25 New York State high school seniors for the 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program by the State Education Department (NYSED). Senator Hinchey recommended Shaan for the Presidential Scholars Program — one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students — based on his academic excellence, extracurricular pursuits, and service to his community.

Senator Michelle Hinchey said, “It was my pleasure to nominate Saugerties High School student Shaan Sekhon for the 2023 Presidential Scholars Program. Shaan has distinguished himself as an intelligent, well-rounded, and highly regarded young leader among his peers, who have recently elected him as their Senior Class President. Shaan stands out for his academic successes and passion for tutoring, his sportsmanship on the Varsity Soccer team, and shines through his community volunteerism with the Key Club and Building Leadership Team. I congratulate Shaan on this esteemed nomination and wish him all the best in the bright future he has ahead."

Established in 1964 by executive order of the President, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program recognizes and honors some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors annually based on academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals. Students chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholars will receive a medallion in June, recognizing their successes.
