Senator Hinchey Announces Anna Markowitz as New Chief of Staff

KINGSTON, NY – Today, Senator Michelle Hinchey announced that she has appointed Anna Markowitz, longtime Assistant County Executive for Ulster County and former Advance Lead for the White House, to serve as the new Chief of Staff of her State Senate Office. Markowitz will take over for Leah Goldman who is starting a new role as National Program Director at ReflectUS, a cross partisan organization working to expand women’s political leadership.

“Leah has been a great leader on Team Hinchey, and I am deeply grateful for her service over the past two years and especially proud of this exciting career step she is taking to help more women enter public service,” Senator Michelle Hinchey said. "In this moment, I could not be more excited to welcome Anna Markowitz, a seasoned professional and an exceptional advocate, to help lead our team. An organizational force with a history of proven leadership, Anna is an excellent addition to Team Hinchey and will be a major asset to the work we do every day to fight for our neighbors and deliver meaningful results.”

Anna Markowitz said, “I am very excited to begin my role with Senator Michelle Hinchey who has been such a champion for our community in Ulster County. I am looking forward to taking my knowledge of operating programs at the county level to inform our work at the State level so that we can continue to improve the lives of our residents.”

In her previous role as Assistant County Executive, Markowitz led a portfolio focused on mental health, substance use disorder, housing, police reform, and social safety nets, overseeing commissions responsible for drafting strategic improvement plans for each priority sector. Markowitz also led the launch of Ulster County’s Universal Basic Income (UBI) program in partnership with UPENN, which was the first-ever countywide UBI pilot in the United States. 

In addition to her work in the Ulster County Executive’s Office, Markowitz worked as Director of Operations for Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado’s primary election campaign and for the Obama and Biden administrations in their Advance Department. In her role with the White House, Markowitz organized large-scale events around the world, serving as team leader and the main surrogate on the ground representing the White House when the President traveled.

Prior to pursuing a path in public service, Markowitz worked in the field of education, where she founded the nonprofit LinkEducation, which helped parents and teachers find educational resources for students.
