Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C, Elma) announces legislation (S.1836) he co-sponsored establishing an advocacy office for people with disabilities has been signed into law by the governor. The office will provide a resource for people with disabilities and help ensure they receive services and support that enable them to make informed choices and decisions.
“Persons with disabilities comprise a significant portion of New York’s population and their needs and concerns must be considered in planning and implementing state programs and services that impact their lives and well-being,” Senator Gallivan said. “This office will advocate on their behalf and help ensure they have the opportunity to exercise the rights and responsibilities accorded to all residents.”
The office of the advocate will advise and assist state agencies in developing policies designed to meet the needs of persons with disabilities. It will also review and report to the governor upon proposed legislation and regulations.
The office was originally established in 1983, but most of the advocacy functions that existed within the original office have disappeared over time.
