Senator Gallivan Joins Colleagues in Introducing Inflation Reduction Plan

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) and members of the Senate Minority Conference have introduced legislation to eliminate the state sales tax on various goods, services and transactions for two years. As families continue struggling with rising costs due to record high inflation, the proposal would provide some relief to hardworking New Yorkers. 

“Individuals and families are facing increased costs for virtually everything, from gasoline and groceries to clothing and utilities,” said Senator Gallivan.  “While there is no simple solution to solve the inflation crisis, there are things we can do to help ease the burden.  Eliminating the sales tax on goods and services that residents use every day will provide some much-needed relief.  I urge my colleagues in the Legislature to support this proposal.”   

The legislation would deliver $2.6 billion in annual tax relief to New Yorkers and would eliminate the state sales tax for two years on the following items: 

• Gas
• Personal Care Items
• Housekeeping Supplies
• Prepared Food 

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index increased 9.1 percent over the past year, the largest 12-month increase since 1981.

This legislation is one component of a comprehensive plan that will be outlined in coming weeks by the Senate Minority Conference to address the inflation crisis and make New York more affordable for hardworking residents.
