Senator Oberacker Blasts Out of Control State Spending

ALBANY, 03/14/22 -- State Senator Peter Oberacker (R/C – Schenevus) commented on his NO vote on the Senate Majority’s one-house budget resolution for fiscal year 2022-23, which was adopted today:

“Governor Hochul’s proposed budget included record spending, but that was a bargain compared to the fairy tale plan advanced by the Senate Majority that adds another $9 billion inflating overall state spending to nearly $225 billion.

“There are positives in this budget that will pay immediate dividends across the state that I can support – repeal of the fiber optic right of way tax that is stifling broadband expansion, additional funding for CHIPS to help fund local road improvements, and the accelerated phase in of the Middle Class Tax Cut.  However, the overall amount of spending is unsustainable and tax hikes are inevitable.

“The budget blows through reserve funds at an unsustainable rate and will leave our state in a highly precarious financial position going forward.  This is the very definition of an election-year budget and is not fiscally responsible. 

“New York is losing population at a record rate and if Albany fails to make major changes to this out-of-control spending plan more people will be on their way out because no one wants to be here when the bill comes due.”
